Main idea of the format:

Flash mob competition between different teams, on a given theme.

Themes

  • Musical (e.g. Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, Tommy, Hair, Rocky Horror Picture Show…)
  • Emotions and framework (joy, fear, surprise, love, hate, friendship, summer…)
  • Famous movies (Star wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, Rocky…)
  • Famous music hits
  • Dance (tango, mambo, ballet, break dance, bossa nova…)
  • Surprise (anniversary, birthdays, weddings, love declarations, family reunions…)
  • Free theme.

Teams

  • Local teams (representing the place they live)
  • Performing arts schools (dancing, acting…)
  • Group of people (such as friends, class mates, colleagues…)

Jury

  • Skilled jury in the television studio + audience at home (web-telephone)

Polls

The performances will be judged by the following criteria:

  • Skill
  • Consistency with the chosen theme
  • Number of participants
  • Complexity of the performance
  • Make up and costumes
  • Choreography
  • Direction (for the flash mobs organized without any help from the TV crew)
  • Location of the performance
  • Surprise (from those who watched it)

Example of TV format

The show will propose a theme and the audience will be asked to prepare a flash mob in a specific amount of time and then they will be required to send a video to the production team.  The best videos will be chosen, aired during the program and then voted by a in-house jury and by the public at home. A delegation of the creators of the chosen flash mob will be invited to the studio to comment on their performance.  Winners will be rewarded with a monetary prize.

Live flash mob:
The highlight of this TV program would be represented by the live show of some flash mobs, broadcasted with the aid of professional cameras and the support of the direction team. Only the best ideas will be chosen and the numerous participants will be assisted by a staff specifically appointed for this role, who will follow the participants from the rehearsal to the final live performance.
Before the live performance, the preparation process during the rehearsal week (participants’ arrival, choreography, make up….) will be shown.

It is very important, before the flash mob starts, to film the surroundings in order to portray the atmosphere and the normal daily activity of the area and of those passing by; as soon as the performance starts, it is important to show their surprise and different reactions.

Live performance:
There will be different choreographies and music depending by the current or next episode’s theme. There will be a possibility for the in-studio audience to participate with a simple choreography and costumes.

Hosts:
There will be two in-studio hosts (a woman and a man) and one for each team, where the flash mobs take place.
It is important that the program, and also the hosts, transmit energy, liveliness, and vitality. The jury will have to participate and judge the dance routines, showing the qualities listed above.
The two hosts in particular will have a very important part in the choreography (for example in Jesus Christ Superstar, the man will be Jesus, the woman Mary Magdalene).

Ironic moments:
At the end of showing of what happened in the previous episode, there will be an ironic moment concerning the two hosts. For example, if the last episode was centered on Jesus Christ Superstar, at the beginning of the next episode the male host will complain that he has been criticized for playing Jesus and consequently getting a big head about it. He will then enter the studio on a throne, held by four people, blessing the public and assuring them he didn’t get a big head about it. If the previous episode was centered on the Rocky Horror Picture Show he will be complaining about people thinking he is a transvestite in real life. When leaving the studio and entering his changing room he will keep complaining about it while getting changed and he will be wearing feminine underwear; on the changing room walls there will be posters of trans-gay icons and waiting for him on the bed there will be a massive hairy man to whom he will jump to once he has finished complaining.
If the last episode was centered on Hair he will complain that people think of him as a junkie-hippy then when he enters the changing room he will light a joint, then he will fire up a hookah and eventually he will open a box and get some white powder out and start snorting it.
Obviously all these moments will be ironic and adapted for a generic public and can also be used as brief sketches for the ending of the show.

Web:
It will be possible to vote live online, during a specific period of time, for the flash mobs proposed. Internet users can vote each criteria of the performance by assigning one or more “stars” on a scale from one to five.

Additional ideas:
A challenge between professionals (performing arts schools and/or semi professionals) and amateurs divided in two different sections.
Among the criteria that can be voted on (choreography, number of participants, skills…) in every episode there will be an extraction (like a wheel of fortune) that will assign a higher score than the others to one criteria.
At the end of the episode, those who organized the flash mob that received a higher number of stars (without considering the votes of the in-studio jury) will win a special prize (a bonus, or vouchers).
Include a section on “Harlem Shake”
Here a compilation that will show better than words what a Harlem Shake is:

Example of the TV-show timeline:
  • Opening theme song and showing of different flash mobs from the web (or previously sent by participants)
  • Arrival of the two hosts that will briefly introduce the purpose of the show (more in depth in the first episode)
  • Presentation of the creators of the two flash mobs that will compete against each other’s (pre recorded flash mobs)
  • Presentation of the in-studio jury; the hosts will give the telephone number and the website that audience can use for voting.
  • Presentation and introduction of the live challenge with the two hosts showing the two different places where the flash mobs will be set to compete against each others.
  • Music break with live performance centered on the night’s theme
  • Showing of the preparation of the two flash mobs that will be shown live
  • Guest time and their performance (singer, dancer, musician…)
  • Showing of the pre recorded flash mobs
  • The in-studio jury will start voting (following the define criteria: skills, difficulty, costumes…)
  • Live broadcast of the two outside flash mobs (that will be voted on during the interval between one episode to the other; then a delegation of the creators from both teams will come in to the studio and the winning flash mob will be declared)
  • Stop to voting from home and results
  • Stop to voting from the in studio jury and sum of the two results; announcement of the winner
  • The next episode theme will be communicated
  • Music break based on the next episode theme
  • Closing theme with hosts ironic sketches
